Lacrosse started off as a game the Native Americans would play way back in 1100 AD, then in the 17th century it became a well known sport all around the world. Now it’s coming to Leavitt Area High School!
There are four main positions in the game of lacrosse, Attack, Midfield, Defense and Goalie. In boys lacrosse there are three attack, three midfielders, three defenders and one goalie on the field at a time for each team. Girls lacrosse has 12 players on the field at a time, There are three attackers, five midfielders, three defenders and one goalie. Attackers job is to receive the ball from the midfielders in transition, and set up the offense. The three attackers must stay on the offensive side of the field because there has to be three players from the team on this side of the field at all times or its a penalty. Midfielders are allowed to play over the entire Lacrosse field. They start the game with a face-off and play both offense and defense. A good midfielder must have speed and endurance since they run up and down the field like soccer. Defenders must stay on the defensive side of the field since there has to be four players (3 Defenders and 1 goalie) on their half or it’s a penalty. It’s the defenders job to make sure the opponent does not score a goal. Defenders usually have longer sticks to allow them to throw better checks and pick off passes from attackers. And finally Goalie is one of the most important positions in lacrosse. The goalie uses a much bigger head and net on their stick to help save shots. The goalie stands in a small circular area around the goal, called the crease, no one from the other team can go in the crease.
