This is the 5th annual cookie convention for the food science classes!! Every year the week before winter break the food science classes have a two-day cookie convention, this consists of learning how to make and bake soft sugar cookies and decorate them using professional techniques called flooding and outline. This week however it isnt just Ms. Henderson running the show, Ms. Grant is here to show off her skills and help perfect the art and science of baking!! Ms. Grant isn’t just a special education teacher here at Leavitt she also runs an at-home bakery,  as well as coaches the indoor and outdoor track jump and sprint program as well as the Leavitt varsity cross-country program.

Day one puts the students in the kitchen, learning how to cream butter and sugar and roll out the perfect thickness of dough to cut and cook their cookies into their desired shapes, they learn that cooking may just be edible chemistry.

Day two is a little different, letting the student’s artistic side show as they decorate their cookies into works of art. They use royal icing to decorate their edible canvases using professional pastry chef techniques the students will work to flood and ice their cookies, “It’s cool to see students who we didn’t expect to sit down and put tons of effort and time into decorate there cookies, then being proud of their final products. ” Agreed both Henderson and Grant, when asked what they like most about the annual cookie con.
