For those who haven’t been up on the news, the U.S. government is considering banning TikTok because of concerns about data privacy and national security. The app is said to be owned by the Chinese company, called ByteDance, and has been getting backlash for sharing user data with the Chinese government. However, the TikTok CEO has denied these allegations. Lawmakers are worried that TikTok could threaten our personal information and even the country’s security. So they’ve been pushing for a ban which they’ve been doing for some years, or tighter restrictions on the app.
Some impacts that TikTok can have on people are these, long-lasting effects on small businesses or content creators. TikTok is the home of many popular creators, and it’s also a platform where others who aren’t so big of creators can go viral in a way that other apps won’t allow. Those who built their following there might struggle to find the same level of success on the platform.
As of today we still have access to TikTok and it’s still up and running, unless you deleted the app there is no way of getting it back. Rules might change, but nobody knows for sure what may happen down the road. There is further speculation that it could be bought out by an American company, which will keep the app from shutting down.
